—Avery Frost
My name is Avery Frost, and I am a graphic designer from Tallahassee, Florida. I specialize in branding, exhibition design, packaging design, and letterpress.
Graphic design spoke to me because of its unique ability to communicate with people and solve problems. It can not only inspire but is a powerful tool for creating change. I love exploring different design styles and mediums and applying them to my work, especially letterpress. Combining traditional techniques with digital design mediums helps me push the boundaries of my design process and discover new skills along the way.
In my free time, you can find me exploring the craft of letterpress or looking for vinyl records at antique stores.
PRESSING ON TOGETHER
What is the letterpress community? The letterpress community is a group of printers who are passionate about the continuation of this craft that we all hold dear. Letterpress printers provide help to one another, from identifying that weird sound your press is making, to helping you move your equipment from one studio to another. The letterpress community is key to making letterpress an accessible art form, through the operation of public studio spaces, and teaching workshops and classes. They help make sure that this craft stays alive long after they are gone by passing down the knowledge they have learned to others and by sharing the craft with people who are interested in learning. Without the letterpress community, letterpress would cease to exist.
For my thesis, I interviewed eight different letterpress artists and asked them to share their stories about their experiences with the letterpress community and what it means to them. I took quotes from the interviews and printed them using letterpress. I also included images from my ‘An Evening of Letterpress’ event.
